Gas should not be stored in the basement

Containers of gas should be stored upright, above ground level and in a well-ventilated place.
Do you store bottles of propane gas at home or in your cabin? To avoid accidents, it is important that you store the gas correctly and legally.
Store upright
Store gas containers upright on a stable surface so that they cannot tip over. All propane cylinders in Norway must have a safety valve. When the gas container becomes too hot, for example in a fire, the safety valve opens to allow the gas to escape. This reduces the pressure and the risk of explosion. The safety valve only works as intended if the container is upright.
Store airy
There must be good ventilation where the gas is to be stored. If there is a leak in the gas container, it is important that the gas can escape. You can store gas inside or outside.
Do not expose to heat
It must not be too hot where you store gas. If you store gas outdoors, leave the containers in the shade. If you are barbecuing with gas, never put the gas bottle under the grill. Also keep gas containers well away from flammable materials and liquids such as lighter fluid and gasoline.
Do not store in the basement
Gas cylinders should not be stored in the basement. Propane gas is heavier than air. If there is a leak in the cylinder, the gas will seep out and collect along the basement floor. It only takes a small spark to ignite the gas. This can result in a powerful explosion that can cause an entire house to lift off its foundations. Gas cylinders should also not be stored in the attic, which is often difficult to access.
Correct storage of gas:
- Store the gas canister upright, on a stable surface.
- Keep a safe distance from sources of ignition and do not expose bottles to excessive heat.
- Gas should never be stored in the basement.
- You can store a maximum of two 11 kg bottles per accommodation unit.
